A Grand Exposition
With a nod to The Great Exhibition of 1851, Cornbrook Creative presented A Grand Exposition in Capital and Centric’s Talbot Mill. The three-day public celebration of the region’s diverse community of artists, makers and creative technologists. Blending exhibitions, entertainment and demonstrations, the event brought about a family-friendly sprawl of technological, science-orientated artworks, maker workshops for all ages, illuminated talks that explored the social and cultural impacts of science and technology, and all manner of science-themed live performances. The event was in conjunction with Capital & Centric, Manchester Science Festival and Cornbrook Creative, and ‘A Grand Exposition’.
It was certainly an art exhibition with a difference! As well as displaying some exciting installations, the event promised talks and discussions, and things to make and do. The weekend was dedicated to educating and inspiring through a contemporary stitching together of art and science.
Some of the artists include Manchester based Logan and Wilcox who displayed their experimental audio-visual installation ‘Verrfast’ (pictured below). Through using headsets and heart rate monitors, data is collected which prompts a sonic and visual performance. This means participants are able to impact the sounds and images produced through controlling their thoughts and heart rate. Having completed live visual sets at Parklife and Bluedot festivals, Logan and Wilcox’s interactive and pioneering installation is nothing short of a visual feast.
Speaking after the announcement, winners Logan and Wilcox said: “We’re thrilled to be part of such an innovation exhibition. What’s interesting for us is that we’ve got an avenue that acknowledges the space where art and science and meet, its an area we think will produce some really exciting work.”
All of our selected artists are working in the North West and share an innovative approach to using science, data and technology to create immersive artworks, performances and installations that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people.
